Peterborough, NH – Alan Robert Ebright, 77, of Peterborough, NH passed away peacefully with his wife Peggy Cappy by his side at RiverMead on August 14, 2026.
Alan was born on February 13, 1949 in Buffalo NY to Robert Leroy Ebright and Norma Jean Ebright. Following a business trip to California, his father moved the family to San Jose, California where Alan grew up.
Alan had an insatiable curiosity about how things worked. One early sign of this came when he took apart the family vacuum cleaner, at age 2. By his early teens Alan had become the neighborhood fix-it person for broken radios for family, friends, and neighbors. He enjoyed the challenge so much he fixed all the broken radios he could find.
While in high school, Alan met Kathleen Williams; they married and had three children: Douglas, Matthew, and Elizabeth. Alan was able to work over the weekends to support his family while attending university. He graduated from University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Alan went on to build a distinguished career in the development of computer technology, with a particular specialty in data storage. Throughout his career he worked for companies including Quantum, Toshiba, and Intel, making significant contributions to the rapidly evolving field of computers. Alan was an inventor as well as an engineer and was granted a number of patents during his career, including two related to remote controls for television programming schedules.
Alan had a remarkable ability to put complicated and technical concepts into language that the simplest among us could understand. He held strong opinions, yet was remarkably accepting of those whose views differed from his own.
Alan loved a good joke, although his own humor was often so subtle that it was lost on others. He was a man of strong emotions who guarded them carefully and shared them selectively. He valued solitude, yet was equally comfortable in a gathering of friends and family.
For decades Alan was a devoted student of Angeles Arrien and her teachings of the Four-Fold Way. His work with Angeles and later with Patrick O’Neill profoundly enriched his relationships and his life. Alan attended every workshop Patrick offered, including an extraordinary trip to Mongolia where Alan and fellow travelers rode by horseback deep into the interior of the country.
Alan was predeceased by his parents and his son Matthew. He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Cappy whom Alan loved with every fiber of his being. Alan is also survived by his sisters, Linda and Janet both of California; his son Doug of California; his daughter Elizabeth, her husband Ben, and their daughter Lee of Providence RI; Lee enjoyed visiting her grandpa at Memory Support where she captivated him and other residents through her full participation in group activities.
Alan is survived by two step-children as well, Leela Howard of Peterborough NH and Jason Wheatcroft and his wife Pauline of Atlanta Georgia. “Boppie” is also survived by five step-grandchildren: Isabelle and Elliana Howard, and Erol, Tau, and Lia Wheatcroft.
The family would like to extend their heart-felt thanks to all the staff who worked on the Memory Support floor of RiverMead for the extraordinarily loving and compassionate care they provided to Alan throughout the end of his life. Their kindness and dedication will always be deeply appreciated.
A remembrance celebrating Alan’s life will take place in California early next year, on his birthday.
