‘Tax-free NH’ motto is embarrassing
With property taxes out of sight and a 12% spike in New Ipswich, it makes the motto “tax-free New Hampshire” embarrassing.
Some residents think that a broad-based tax is the solution, but I disagree. We already have Jeanne Shaheenโs statewide property tax, which helped for about two years but thereafter, taxes have consistently broken new records. Worse yet, the student enrollment is way down in our district, while tax bills give the image of student population doubling.
Another broad-based tax could work if it were managed by conservative folks like myself, but it doesnโt stand a chance when run by liberal spenders who religiously coddle the greedy, unionized public schools. The end result would be property taxes shooting back up and the new tax never going away because itโs always easy to spend other peopleโs money. Itโs a sad reality, but I believe that we could send all of our students individually to private schools for far less cost. Furthermore, this heavy burden will soon be passed on to the very same students that these educators claim to care about. By the way, with town/municipal spending sky high, theyโre not a bunch of conservative saints either.
Iโve noted that Market Basket shoppers are plentiful and the pumps at a cheaper gas station are well-occupied because people are trying to save. However, in contrast, too many of these same folks lose all sense of reality once inside a voting booth and spend like thereโs no tomorrow.
In the past, New Ipswich had been a relatively conservative town and residents should keep it that way when voting. If not, we might as well eliminate the motto “Tax-free New Hampshire” and replace it with “Northern Massachusetts.”
