Social Security and Medicare at the polls
Social Security and Medicare need to be on your mind when you vote. We need to secure these programs for current seniors and for workers who will need these earned benefits and services in retirement. Privatizing Social Security, risking our income, and demanding people 65 and older work is not acceptable. Medicare is already expensive, especially when you consider the supplemental health insurance and prescription coverage we pay for.
Another part of the picture is the economic cost to New Hampshire with any cuts to these programs. About 300,000-plus seniors 65 and older receive Social Security benefits here. This is a major economic issue in the state. Beyond the money seniors need from their earned benefits to live, the state also benefits from the money seniors spend.
Whether a candidate for the U.S. Congress or U.S. Senate or a New Hampshire governor, executive councilor, state senator, or state representative, each of them affects our Social Security. Congress sets the rules for this program, while the spending factor depends on how our state representatives work for or against us and our state. Without an adequate Medicare program, our state and our tax base will have to carry more of the burden. Check out our candidates from top to bottom and see where they fall on our health, income and the economy of New Hampshire.
