Asleep at the wheel

The MLT really missed the bus with the headline, “As supporters want spending reined in, school tax cap faces unanimous opposition from ConVal board.” First: Supporters of what? Second, you quote Jarvis Adams and cite him as a resident of Greenfield in the first paragraph and get around to mentioning his candidacy for state rep a whole paragraph later. In neither paragraph do you mention that his party has been undermining public education on every front for the last 10 years they’ve held the fiscal reins in New Hampshire, most recently via Question 2, which is a Republican ruse to make voters think they are trying to find solutions to the problem of skyrocketing property taxes. If they cared about money out of voters’ pockets, they’d distribute the taxes that the state collects for education instead of frittering it away on vouchers. Later you quote Curtis Hamilton without adding that he, too, is a Greenfield resident. In fact, he is also their School Board member. In addition to participating in the arduous task of producing the ConVal budget, he has produced a deep dive into the nexus of state funding and local taxes. The MLT should feature that information as well. I can’t tell if the article was biased against public school funding or just plain lazy. Or maybe it was a last-minute plug for Adams’ candidacy. I may seem biased because I am running against him for reelection to the House, but if you are going to quote him before you quote an expert like Hamilton, you should be transparent about his politics. And perhaps about any biases held by the author.
