Yes, I am an Independent

Richard Barbalato’s letter (Sept 23) questioned whether I’m really an Independent.
I am an Independent.
Somewhere along the way, working with people from both parties became a charge to defend against. I am running because I believe that is exactly what our community needs. Someone accountable to our district, not to a party. Someone committed to using common sense and finding common ground.
I got on the ballot the way any Independent must, by asking neighbors to sign a petition. They did that, in numbers well beyond what was required. I am grateful to every one of them, Republican, Democrat and undeclared. Regardless of party affiliation, we all share a common belief that we must work together to solve the problems we face in our community.
I did not ask anyone to write my name in on the primary ballot. In fact, for 11 hours, I stood outside polling places explaining that I did not want to be written in. I said so then, and I’ll say it again: any attempt to deceive voters about their choices isn’t the kind of politics our towns deserve.
On the day I filed to run, Mary Murphy and I spoke and agreed to keep this campaign cordial and honest. I have held to that commitment, and I hope Richard will too.
The problems we face as a community will be solved by neighbors willing to work together, and representatives willing to cross party lines to do the right thing for the community. As the headline in his letter says, honest and accurate information is important to all. On that, we agree. TIMCOFFINNH.com has my position on issues.
I am Tim Coffin, an Independent who will work hard for Francestown and Deering.
