It was a battle of youth versus experience this past weekend, when the Southern New Hampshire Hurricanes, a youth softball team, faced off against the Greenville Fire Department members in a charity match.
On Sunday afternoon, the teams held a Softball Throwdown match, and ultimately the firefighters won 17-12.
Following the game, the teams enjoyed a post-game cool-down thanks to a spray from the water hose.
Ken Whitson, sponsor of the Hurricanes, said the team was formed this year to offer youth sports after Boynton Middle School sports were put on the chopping block in the district’s default budget.
The Hurricanes, named in a nod to coach Katrina Amadon and Hurricane Katrina, are a travel team that doesn’t play in any particular league, but takes on other youth teams in the area. Mostly, said Whitson, the team is a chance for them to focus on polishing individual skills in a team environment.
The game against the Temple and Greenville first responders was the first charity game played by the Hurricanes and included a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds from ticket sales supporting the Greenville Fire Department. Whitson said the girls are ready to challenge other area Fire Departments for charity games.
The raffle raised about $100 for the Fire Department.
“It was all in fun,” said Whitson. “It was some good laughs, and good, small community entertainment.”
The team has been practicing at a field in Mason. They are finalizing a practice and home field location for the fall. To support the Hurricanes, offer field space or arrange a game, contact Whitson at 603-930-1884.
