Equal to the best
Twice a week I wait by my mailbox for the delivery of the Ledger-Transcript, anxious to read about what’s happening next door and, yes, across the globe. Why? Because the quality of reportage and journalism I’m about to read is remarkably the best. A recent edition included two pieces that exemplify why I’m out there waiting.
Both offer superb analysis based on rock-solid facts informed by lifelong engagements with their subject matter – equal to or better than many offerings in newspapers thought to represent the best their countries have to offer: the NYT, the Guardian, Al Jazeera and Haaretz.
Moreover, L-T’s own reporters deliver to us week in and week out essential information about the towns and villages in our region. What residents, volunteers and public officials are wrestling with, talking about and trying to agree on. At the same time, we learn of events and happenings in the lives of our friends and neighbors that bring us together.
At the local and state level, Tim Coffin, leading from the middle, offers experience in finding ways to responsibly finance government while promoting leadership unfettered from party biases that have brought us to the brink of national insolvency by governments unable and unwilling to provide a safe, secure social and economic environment for everyone.
Robert Beck deals with global issues which are no less relevant to our communities, certainly those with members serving in the armed forces. One would hope that his analysis and advice, available to the readers of the L-T, might also reach the ears of the decision-makers.
At least this quality journalism will continue to be available to us to make our choices, wise and compassionate, when voting in the upcoming primaries and general election.
