A barn at Nubanusit Neighborhood & Farm was destroyed early Wednesday after a fire broke out, requiring a second alarm and mutual aid from seven fire departments.
Peterborough Fire and Rescue, accompanied by mutual aid departments, responded to a fire on 7 Callie’s Common at approximately 12:06 a.m. Wednesday, July 30.
When Peterborough Fire and Rescue arrived, the barn was fully involved, according to Fire Chief Ed Walker.
An officer requested a second alarm at 12:11 a.m., to which Jaffrey Fire Department, Greenfield NH Volunteer Fire Department, New Ipswich Fire Department, Antrim Fire & Ambulance, Hancock NH Fire Department, Dublin Fire Department and Francestown NH Fire Rescue responded to the scene.
Chief Walker said the team spent 30 to 40 minutes handling the engulfed barn and stayed for a few hours afterward to manage 12 rolled hay bales that had been in the building.
Known as the horse barn on the property, there have been no horses kept inside the barn, only farming equipment, according to Chief Walker. No one was injured.
The fire departments were able to contain the fire after some concern it would spread to the second barn on the property.
Chief Walker said the cause is not suspicious. While they continue to investigate, he said they are looking into stained singles stored in the building, which can overheat without proper care.
The barn’s post-and-beam structure is all that’s left.
