For over 25 years, the Monadnock Milers have combined the love of running with community-oriented motivation.

“Our aim with it is to get the local community involved, educate them about the sport and provide opportunities for the community to come together centered around fitness and running in particular,” Yolanda Flamino, co-president of the Monadnock Milers, said.

Life-long runners, Yolanda and Lance Flamino have been co-presidents of the Milers since September.

Lance remembers when he joined in 2008 after moving to the Monadnock region.

“It was an awesome group for me to find, and it was a wide range of abilities from people who are really competitive and serious runners to people who are just starting out,” he said.

The siblings grew up in an athletic family and now continue this passion in the community.

Summer Sizzler

The Monadnock Milers Summer Sizzler Series started last year after the group stopped attending other races during the summer season.

This year the series hosts weekly races in Peterborough, Hancock and Greenfield until the final Twilight Track Meet on Aug. 5.

The Flaminos said these events and group running meet-ups create community and motivate people to get outside.

“That’s one of the big benefits of participating in club activities, is it makes it easier and more fun to get out the door and do something that can be challenging, but also rewarding at times,” Yolanda said.

In addition to the series, the Monadnock Milers meet each week on Wednesday nights at the ConVal Track in the summer or downtown Peterborough in the winter. If there’s no race, the group also runs on Saturday mornings in Hancock.

“Then either jump in the pond or go to fiddleheads after,” Lance said.

The siblings pointed out everyone is welcome to join, no matter your running experience or membership.

First race of four

The Monadnock Milers Summer Sizzler Series started at ConVal with 25 participants running 2.7 miles on Monday.

Harrison Kim won the race with a 15:29 time, setting a new course record.

Currently, Kim and Kristen Seitz have the most points, with earnings divided by gender and based on the number of finishers. The points will continue to build during the series.

There are two more long-distance races this summer before the Twilight Track Meet.

The next race is on Monday, July 20 at Moose Brook Park in Hancock. Registration starts at 6 p.m., with the race kicking off at 6:30 p.m. To participate, it is $5 per race or $25 for the series and a T-shirt.
