The Grove Street Bridge is expected to close beginning on or about June 22 as the town undertakes a bridge refurbishment project.
The start date is weather-dependent and contingent on the completion of work on the Elm Street Bridge, which town officials said remains on schedule and within budget.
During the approximately eight-week construction period, the bridge and its sidewalks will be closed to motorists and pedestrians traveling between Grove Street and the downtown area.
Alternative routes will remain available throughout the project, including the Main Street Bridge, Elm Street Bridge, Summer Street, High Street and Union Street. Detour signs will be installed before the closure, particularly for traffic approaching from the Route 101 corridor, and additional signage may be added as needed.
Town officials said the project is necessary to address deterioration of the bridge before conditions worsen and require more extensive and costly repairs. Planning for the refurbishment has been underway for several years.
The project is being funded through the Greater Downtown Tax Increment Financing District.
The town is encouraging residents, visitors and business owners to plan ahead during the construction period and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation.
