Peterborough, NH – Deborah A. Hanson, 68, of Peterborough, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully at Massachusetts General Hospital on May 4, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 11, 1957, in Peterborough to Alvin Joseph “Joe” Hanson and Elizabeth (Blanchette) Hanson.
Raised in Peterborough, Deb was known for her steady presence, her generous heart, and her ability to nurture a sense of community wherever she went. She helped anyone who asked, always with a smile, and remained happy and optimistic despite years of health challenges.
She was a devoted member of the Union Congregational Church and found joy in caring for others in countless ways, including making handmade blankets for all of the babies welcomed into her extended family and circle of friends.
Deb was grateful for every day that she could spend loving those she loved. Much of her gratitude stemmed from the second chance she was given after a lung transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital 22 years ago. She is said to be the longest living lung recipient from Mass General, which stands as a remarkable testament to her strength and determination.
Deb is survived by her siblings, Alvin Hanson, Jr., Sandy Hanson, and her twin brother Bruce Hanson. She will be deeply missed by her nieces and nephews, Krystal (Zak), Erica (Michael), and Joshua (Jess); and by her great-nieces and great-nephews, Michael, Austin, Violet, and Finn. She is also lovingly remembered by her extended family, including the many cousins she kept close.
She also leaves her Corgi, Gabe (also known as Gabriel of Woodland Heights), who has found a loving home with a member of Deb’s dialysis family.
Deb had countless friends who will miss her dearly.
In addition to her parents, Deb was predeceased by her brother, Michael Hanson, in 2023.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Union Congregational Church, 33 Concord Street, Peterborough. Burial will immediately follow in the family plot at Pine Hill Cemetery, followed by a reception at the American Legion, Post 11, 20 Webster Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Deb’s name to the Alpha-1 Foundation, Attn: Development Office, 3300 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, FL 33134.
