The George Holmes Bixby Memorial Library in Francestown will host Inez McDermott on Wednesday, March 25 at 6 p.m. in the Town Hall for a program titled “Portraits of a Revolution.”
The talk examines American portraits created in the years before and after the Revolution, focusing on how the ideals in founding documents are reflected in visual art. McDermott will analyze portraits of well-known and lesser-known figures as texts and discuss artistic influences and traditions shaping the works. Attendees will be introduced to basic art analysis techniques.
The event is part of “The Big Watch,” a statewide initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. A related community screening of excerpts from a new film by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt is planned for May.
The program is supported by New Hampshire Humanities, NHPBS and the Cogswell Benevolent Trust.
