A fire that started in the garage of a Greenville home extended into the residence, causing significant damage and displacing the homeowners on Friday.

Greenville firefighters responded at approximately 12:46 p.m. Friday to a report of a fire at 48 Rousseau Heights. Fire Chief Ben Buttrick said he struck a second alarm after determining more manpower was needed.

According to Buttrick, the fire started in the garage, which was a drive-under style located under the residence. The fire extended through the garage, into the single-story residence, and into the attic.

The homeowners were able to call for the fire department and got out of the house.

The only injury was to a firefighter who was bitten while restraining a dog that was trying to re-enter the home, according to Buttrick. A cat is still unaccounted for.

The home has heavy fire and water damage throughout. The fire extended through the whole attic, which spans the length of the house. Fire in the garage destroyed motorcycles and a lawn mower.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office. The family is being assisted by the Red Cross.
