Freedom of speech: Another ‘veteran’s perspective’
A month or so ago, I wrote about our “leader’s” failure to honor the oath of office he took, and I expressed concerns about several other actions he has taken regarding his deployment and “pruning” of the leadership of our armed forces.
Those concerns did not include his bullying of the six Democratic lawmakers, all former
military veterans, who released a video intended to remind members of the military and
intelligence communities that “Our laws are clear…. You can refuse illegal orders.”
Their message should not have been needed. But it was. How did our fearless leader
react? He accused the Democrats of “Seditious Behavior, punishable by Death!”
That was followed by an effort by the dude running the Pentagon to censure
Sen. Mark Kelly and initiate a military review of his public statements that would lead to a
reduction in the senator’s rank and pension. I, too, am a retired Navy captain with a
pension. Am I next?
Sen. Kelly is not a pushover for bullies. His record speaks for itself. He fought
back.
A federal judge, appointed by a Republican president whom I respect, wrote in a 29-page ruling, “Rather than trying to shrink the First Amendment liberties of retired service members, Secretary Hegseth and his fellow Defendants might reflect and be grateful for the wisdom and expertise that retired service members have brought to public discussions and debate on military matters in our Nation over the past 250 years…If so, they will more fully appreciate why the Founding Fathers made free speech the first Amendment in the Bill of Rights!”
Enough is enough. Let’s get real, thoughtful, and competent leaders where they are currently lacking in the White House, the Pentagon, the Senate, Congress, even Concord!! Character trumps policy … and party!
