The Forest Society and UNH Cooperative Extension will host a guided winter tour of an active timber harvest Saturday, Feb. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. off Dudley Pond Road in Henniker.

The hike will take participants through a working harvest site, where foresters will explain how trees are selected for cutting, how forests regenerate after a harvest, and how timber moves from forest to mill. The tour will also highlight new techniques being tested to encourage a wider mix of tree species amid heavy deer browsing.

Topics include logging machinery, wildlife habitat considerations, timber markets, and timber harvesting laws and best practices.

The route includes uneven, icy and steep terrain. Traction devices are required, and participants should be prepared to be outdoors for three hours.

Parking is limited, and registration is required at forestsociety.org/events. Weather updates will be emailed Feb. 13. Questions can be directed to Wendy Weisiger at 603-224-9945 or wweisiger@forestsociety.org.
