New Hampshire illustrator Marty Kelley visited the Mason Elementary School on Dec. 8 as part of a literacy initiative funded by the Children’s Literacy Foundation.
Kelley spoke to the children about “Santa’s Underwear,” a picture book written by Marty Rhodes Figley and illustrated by Kelley, a funny tale about Santa searching for a replacement when his regular Christmas long-johns go missing.
The students prepared for the visit by reading Kelley’s books and decorating their classrooms and school hallways with colorful pictures of the various types of underwear from “Santa’s Underwear.”
Kelley told stories, shared his love of reading and writing, and kept students and teachers
laughing with his newest book โFathers Fart.”
Earlier this year, the received a rural library CLiF grant, with the provided funding including new children’s books for the library, for the Mason Elementary School, as well as multiple author visits. Kelley is the second author to visit Mason as part of the grant.
As part of the celebration, the Mason Public Library showcased the 110 books, as well as an additional $500 worth of books the CLiF grant provided for Mason Elementary School classrooms.
