The Peterborough Town Library and Friends of the Library will host “Ernest Harold Baynes: New Hampshire’s Own Doctor Dolittle,” a talk by Mary Kronenwetter, on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m.

Ernest Harold Baynes, a self-taught naturalist and early 20th-century wildlife conservationist, was known nationally for his work in animal behavior, bird and bison restoration and humane advocacy. At his home in New Hampshire, Baynes lived alongside tame animals, including a bear, fox, boar and bison. He championed bird sanctuaries, opposed the feather trade, and helped establish the American Bison Society with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt.

Kronenwetter’s illustrated lecture will include archival photographs from the Plainfield Historical Society. She holds a doctorate in educational research and has worked at historic sites across New England.

The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Peterborough Library and the New Hampshire Humanities Council, is free and open to the public.
