Mill tours twice-missed
Richard Verney and I never crossed paths. However, in 2017 I took a 11,100-mile camping trip across the country and into Canadian provinces. I tried to get a tour of the mill in Munising, Mich., but the chief administrator who spoke with me said they did not have anyone to spare to give me a trip through the plant. I had explained that as a young child, I used to go with my father through the paper mills where he was employed (as well as the Hood processing plant in Vermont). He said Monadnock Paper Mills was their competitor in producing the new kind of paper being used for customers.
Before the pandemic struck, I attended Monadnock Paper Mills’ outdoor celebration of the business, even playing on a harp. However, the plans to offer tours of the inside of the plant did not materialize as COVID struck and prospects were cancelled.
Two hoped for opportunities were cancelled by circumstances of no employee being free for a tour and a health disaster disrupting another wish. Perhaps the Verney family will do tours of the plant for those of us with curiosity and desire to see what is happening within the business instead of just looking at the building and smoke stacks as we drive past. I was surprised to hear about Monadnock Paper Mills when I was heading west; Mr. Verney and Monadnock Paper Mills have a good reputation.
