The Colonial Theatre, in partnership with Keene State College, will present Grammy-nominated vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. The concert is part of the groupโ€™s 50th Anniversary Celebration Tour.

Founded in Washington, D.C., in 1973, the ensemble is known for powerful harmonies and socially conscious performances that address civil rights, womenโ€™s issues, and justice. Current members include vocalists Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Aisha Kahlil, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Rochelle Rice, bassist Romeir Mendez, and American Sign Language interpreter Barbara Hunt.

โ€œSweet Honey in the Rock is more than music โ€” itโ€™s a force for change, compassion, and community,โ€ said Keith Marks, executive director of The Colonial Theatre. โ€œTo celebrate their 50th anniversary on our stage is a tremendous honor.โ€

Over the past five decades, the group has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center, and appeared at cultural milestones including Harry Belafonteโ€™s 95th birthday and the Ms. Foundationโ€™s 50th anniversary.

The Colonial Theatre is at 95 Main St., Keene. Tickets are $40โ€“$60 and available at thecolonial.org or 603-352-2033.
