The Peterboro Transcript rang in the 1900s on Jan. 4 with an announcement from Cohen & Quint, New York Clothing Company of Peterboro that due to a need for money because of increased costs, it was selling its entire stock of clothing – “$5,000 to $7,000 worth of honest made goods” – for half the market price.

The deals included single-breasted black suits for $3.78, boys’ topcoats for $2.50 and heavy duck coats for $1.28, along with “many more bargains that space forbids us to mention.”

“We have been here for five years and expect to be for twenty-five years to come.”

The sales did come with one note, however: “NOTICE – Goods sold for cash only.”
