If, today, the state Legislature approved a bill allowing a portion of one Monadnock region town to split off from another to form its own municipality, there would be huge headlines splashed across the front page of the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript.
Readers of the Aug. 8, 1872 Peterboro Transcript, however, would have had to go through the list of laws passed in the June session to find “An Act to constitute the town of Greenville from a part of the territory of the town of Mason.” It set out the borders of the new town and spelled out the division of “all real and personal property, including all debts claims and demands of every kind” between the two towns.
