On Sunday, July 28, at 11 a.m. Michael Kimmel will present “Angry White Men: Masculinity on the Extreme Right” for the Monadnock Summer Lyceum at Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church, 25 Main St.
Kimmel will reference his book “Angry White Men” and other research data to look at anger’s causes and explore more-positive possibilities.
Kimmel earned his BA from Vassar, a Master of Arts from Brown, and his doctorate from UC Berkeley. He taught at Bryant College, UC Berkeley, the State University of New York and Rutgers. He is founder and editor of the academic journal Men and Masculinities and a national spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism.
His documentary history on masculinity in America traces the early colonists’ understanding of manhood, and he has written a book, “Manhood in America,” on that topic. Kimmel’s book “Guyland” looks at contemporary male expectations and issues. For example, almost 70% of American males in the 1960s had received a full formal education, married and officially begun adult life. By 2008, only one third had done so. In “The Gendered Society,” Kimmel argues that both genders will benefit from gender equality.
Adar Cohen, a resident of Peterborough who earned his doctorate in conflict resolution from Trinity College Dublin and is also a Harvard lecturer, will moderate the program. Cohen co-founded the Civic Leadership Foundation, which helps young people prepare for life as students and citizens.
People can arrive by 10:30 to for the music of Amy Conley, performer, music director and teacher from Milford.
The program will be streamed live at monadnocklyceum.org, as well as on a Youtube video people can watch at their convenience.
