New Hampshire Fish and Game reported assisting a hiker of Bald Mountain in Antrim Saturday.
According to a press release from Fish and Game, at approximately 2:52 p.m., the department was notified by New Hampshire State Police dispatch of a hiker who called 911 who was feeling weak and dizzy. The hiker was identified as 70-year-old Jeffrey McAulay of New York City and was located on the Tudor Trail on Bald Mountain.
Members of Hancock Police and Fire, Antrim Fire, Bennington Fire, Peterborough Fire and Rescue and conservation officers responded. In speaking with the hiker over the phone, a conservation officer instructed the hiker to drink water and try and eat some food. Having not brought any with him, he was given water from other members of his hiking party.
After resting for a short time and meeting with local fire and rescue personnel, McAulay was encouraged to keep moving under his own power. He arrived back at the trailhead near Willard Pond at 4:10 p.m. It was later determined that he was hiking with a group friends and did not bring any food or water for himself despite the warm weather conditions.
McAulay was evaluated by Peterborough Ambulance and declined transport to a nearby hospital.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department reminds outdoor enthusiasts to prepare themselves before venturing out into the wilderness, including packing the ten essential items: map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain/wind jackets and pants and a knife.
