Wilton is seeking a plan for the future of the volunteer-managed Still Good Shed.

During their meeting on Monday, board members discussed the shed, which is used for donations of items that are still usable.

In a previous meeting, board members had requested for volunteers and Recycling Center Director Carol Burgess to come up with proposals on how to improve the shed and access. Still Good Shed volunteer Sandy Lafleur explained that the volunteer coverage for the shed is spotty, as it is intended to be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but some shifts are only covered for half the day, and others not at all.

Burgess, along with Town Administrator Nick Germain, had met with the partner towns that contribute to the recycling center, who indicated they werenโ€™t in favor of paying an attendant to monitor the shedย or running it as part of the regular operations.

The town has received a quote for installing lights in the shed, and security cameras have been discussed. Lafleur said the main issues at the shed remain the need for better lighting, security, signs, the potential of installing a canopy and outdoor storage cabinetsย and additional volunteers.

Select Board Chair Matt Fish said despite previous discussions on presenting a plan for the shed, he wasnโ€™t satisfied with the discussion on Monday, saying he had expected a more-comprehensive plan or policy.

โ€œWeโ€™re beating around the bush,โ€ Fish told Burgess. โ€œThis is a well-enjoyed effort that multiple people have put their blood, sweat and tears into, and youโ€™re just not meeting us halfway, youโ€™re not. We asked for a very specific response from you, and itโ€™s not here.โ€

Burgess said the department was understaffed, and running on a โ€œskeleton crew,โ€ and said there werenโ€™tย hours available to dedicate to the shed.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what to offer you but my people, and I canโ€™t offer you my people,โ€ Burgess said.

Selectman Kermit Williams disagreed, ย noting that it was Burgessโ€™ duty to run the recycling center, and that the Still Good Shed was a community effort.

โ€œI believe the Still Good Shed was always identified as a volunteer concept,โ€ Williams said. โ€œShe has not necessarily provided everything youโ€™ve asked for, but I think sheโ€™s been supportive of Sandyโ€™s efforts.โ€

Fish directed Burgess again to submit a proposal for how to augment the volunteers at the Still Good Shed.
