Dublin Consolidated School students participated in the “One School, One Book” program for the second year in a row.
As part of the program, all students read “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard and Florence Atwater. The program aims to build literacy skills, cultivate a joy for reading and support collaboration across the entire school.
Students were encouraged to read each Monday to Thursday evening. Each student received a copy of the book, a bookmark and a reading schedule. Students participated in daily activities throughout the school that correlated with each chapter. Additionally, the school was decorated with penguins to get students excited about reading.
The program culminated with a literacy night on Feb. 2, where students shared the artworks and projects that they have created throughout the activities.
“Our students have expressed a real love for this book and excitement for all the fun activities associated with this program,” Principal Shawne Hilliard said. “It is great to see students from kindergarten to grade four come together for a common purpose that supports learning, collaboration and fun.”
The book, which won a John Newbery Medal, tells the story of Mr. Popper and his adventures with penguins.
The program was sponsored by the PTO.
