The Jaffrey-Rindge MLK Committee will hold its “Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.” event Monday, Jan. 16, from 5 to 6 p.m. at The Park Theatre, 19 Main St., Jaffrey, followed by a reception and exhibit.

The event will also be livestreamed at parkyoutube.com.

The theme this year is “Justice Everywhere.” Directing attention to King’s exhortation, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” the event will focus on environmental justice. Aaron Mair, an environmental leader, wilderness advocate and public health expert, will be the keynote speaker.

Mair is a recent past president of the national Sierra Club and was the club’s first African-American president. He served on the Clinton White House Council on Environmental Quality and was a recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Quality Award for his leadership in the campaign to require General Electric to clean up the Hudson River.  He will address “Shades of justice: building a diverse and inclusive environmental movement.”

Other features include musical performances by district school choruses, presentation of sixth-grade projects on environmental justice and announcement of the MilliporeSigma-MLK Student Scholarship opportunity.  Sierra Leone-born, New Hampshire-raised musician Senie Hunt, now living in Nashville, will lead the closing audience sing via the music video premiere of his original composition, “Stand Together.”
