Rindge Conservation Commission invites the public to explore the outdoors by moonlight at Converse Meadow at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.

The hike is free and open to everyone. It begins from the parking area off Converseville Road, north of Route 119 about 3 1/2 miles east of Route 202. December’s full moon, which occurs on Dec. 7, will be at 95 percent of its peak illumination the night of the hike, providing plenty of moonlight for an outdoor ramble. The Abenaki called this full moon the Winter Maker Moon – a name that recognizes the grip of winter that takes hold this time of year.

Although the long-term weather forecast does not call for inclement weather, participants are advised to bundle up with layers, hat, gloves and shoes with good traction. The hike will start near the shoreline of Converse Meadow Pond, where moist air can be chilly and cause icy spots on trails. Flashlights also are encouraged.

The Moonlight Hike and annual Hike and Paddle Series are part of the year-round activities hosted by the Rindge Conservation Commission. The events highlight the trails, forests and wetlands in Rindge. Each outing is led by an experienced Conservation Commission member with specific knowledge of the history and natural features present on the conservation land.

The Rindge Conservation Commission actively monitors and protects wetlands, lakeshores, watersheds and other natural resources within the Town of Rindge.  Hikes, workdays and educational events are held regularly to involve and educate the public about conservation areas and benefits of preserving land for the future.
