Two nations on the edge, or beyond the point of no return? Let’s examine them – Red Sox Nation and our beloved American nation. Where do they stand?

One on the eve of an existential election in three weeks. The other about to face the possibility of degrading two decades of a new winning tradition. Let this examination be conducted in an objective manner. Use our intelligence, knowledge and objectivity.

Enough of the nonsense that the current president stole the election. Get on with an honest revaluation of our history. Shoulder the sins of the past and make amends for the damage they have caused. Indeed, our nation is remarkable and admirable in many ways, uniquely so in some.

On a fateful day this November, will the nation pull back from the edge, accept fact over fantasy, compassion not cruelty and restart its effort to form a more-perfect union? Or will it topple over to descend into yet another failed state riven with hate and discord, ignoring facts and truths and hell-bent for ruination. Is it too late?

And come the end of the post season play, XanderBogaerts of the Red Sox will be eligible for free agency. Enough of the bleating by the super-rich Sox owners that they can’t afford to retain their outstanding citizen/shortstop. Is the failure to sign Bogaerts an abandonment of the character and culture that emerged in the past two decades of winning, spirited glorious baseball?

Both nations face existential challenges. Both are moving in the wrong direction. Will enough citizens vote to right their nation? Will Red Sox owners commit to continued excellence? By Thanksgiving, we shall have a good idea of what to expect next summer and the decades to come.
