More than 100,000 historical items, including paintings by Monadnock region artists, postcards from around the world, posters, stamps, prints, tools, a Goodell knife collection and assorted antiques, are on sale in Hancock this weekend.
The collection of postcards, paintings and prints, which include Thomas Nast as well as local artists dating back to the early 20th century, will be for sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the old railroad station on Depot Street in Hancock.
The collection belongs to Hancock resident David Sysyn, who will be donating 10 percent of proceeds to Future in Sight (formerly New Hampshire Association for the Blind), Antrim Lions Club and the Ukrainian Relief Fund.
Sysyn, a painter, musician and street performer whose artistic family is rooted in Hancock, has been displaying his postcard collection for 40 years, which he obtained largely through his travels as an international air courier. He referred to the postcards as “time capsules” because they contain a postmark, written messages and stamps from their respective eras.
“People often think of artistic movements like the Hudson River School, but the Monadnock region has its own share of creative artists,” Sysyn said.
Admission is free and there will be no sales tax. For payment, only cash and checks will be accepted.
