A hiker was rescued by helicopter off of Mount Monadnock on June 30 after falling headfirst.
According to a release from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, the hiker, Gary Cohen of Boston, is 63 and sustained injuries from his fall. He had submitted the mountain and was making his way down the White Dot Trail when he fell.
The hiking website alltrails.com classifies the White Dot Trail as a challenging hike.
New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers, along with Mount Monadnock rangers, staff and volunteers worked together to carry Cohen to the helicopter landing zone, which was near the summit. Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART) transported Cohen by helicopter to Elliot Hospital in Manchester, where he was treated for his injuries.
According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game statement, “This incident is a good reminder to know your limits and when to turn back. If recreating in the outdoors, please dress appropriately, hike with a partner or group, and carry necessary equipment.”
