Where were all the patriots when former President Donald Trump was plotting with his advisers to overthrow the U.S. government and Constitution?
Thus far, the Jan. 6 committee has presented irrefutable evidence of at least two facts – Trump and his toadies were plotting a coup to reject the results of the 2020 presidential election, and all of the people around him, including most of his followers in Congress, were complicit by their silence in this attempt.
These people could have stood up for the rule of law and the Constitution in real time and defused the situation. Instead, although some of them tried to dissuade Trump and, in the end (the very end), Vice President Mike Pence refused to violate the Constitution, no one came forward to say publicly, “This is what’s happening. This is wrong.”
Retired federal Judge J. Michael Luttig, a universally respected conservative, issued a statement on June 16 calling Jan. 6 “… a war for America’s democracy, a war irresponsibly instigated and prosecuted by the former president, his political party allies, and his supporters. … These wars were conceived and instigated from our nation’s capital by our own political leaders collectively and they have been cynically prosecuted by them to fever pitch, now to the point that they have recklessly put America herself at stake.”
Still today, we hear mostly crickets from members of Congress who knew then and know now that Joe Biden was duly elected president of the United States. That there was no election fraud and that what happened on Jan. 6 – and in the weeks leading up to it, and in all the weeks since – was and is based on lies.
“America First”? No, America destroyed.
