Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jack E. Davis will discuss his new book, “The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird” during the Monadnock Writers’ Group meeting Saturday, June 18, at 9:45 a.m. in Bass Hall at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture, 19 Grove St., Peterborough.

Davis is a past MacDowell fellow who lives part-time in Harrisville and is a professor of environmental history at the University of Florida. He has written 10 books, including “An Everglades Providence: Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century” and “The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea.” Davis received the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for History and Kirkus Prize for nonfiction for “The Gulf.”

In his latest book on the bald eagle, Davis shares stories of the Founding Fathers, hunters, bird rescuers and the lives of bald eagles themselves – monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents. Davis delves into a cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s journey may provide inspiration today.

The event is free, and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees.

Since 1984, the Monadnock Writers’ Group (MWG) has supported local writers of all genres and levels of achievement. Monthly meetings, held on the third Saturday of each month, bring a variety of writers to the Monadnock Region to offer their experiences. In addition, MWG publishes periodic anthologies and “Smoky Quartz,” a semi-annual online journal of literature and art. Throughout the year, MWG hosts public readings and informal gatherings to raise awareness of the literary talent in the Monadnock Region. Learn more at monadnockwriters.org and smokyquartz.org.
