Wilton-Lyndeborough students celebrated Earth Day last week by beautifying the community.
On Friday, students from Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative Middle/High School, Florence Rideout Elementary School and Lyndeborough Central School all pitched in to clean up trash, plant flowers and refresh paint around the school and in the community.
Along with volunteers from the Wilton Community Center roadside cleanup team, students, teachers and staff got to work clearing trash from the roadways. The students of the middle school remained in the area around Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative to clean the grounds, while the high-school students went out into the community to clean roadways.
“It feels really great to help our community, and the Earth,” said eighth-grader Brycen Kusher.
Zach Provost, WLC social studies teacher, added, “It was so rewarding seeing the district come together to appreciate our community, and spend some joyous time outside.”
Collectively, all the students and staff across the district contributed a total of about 800 hours of community service.
WLC seniors and members of the National Honor Society visited the elementary school to clean the surrounding area, and to help elementary students spread student-painted “kindness rocks.” Students also cleared rocks and sticks from the playground and the field in front of the school to make it a better place to play for their younger counterparts.
The Middle/High School Student Leadership Team donated lilac bushes and spent the morning planting them, as well as day lilies and irises around the school.
Sophomores and juniors traveled by bus to Lyndeborough to assist with the cleanup of Lyndeborough Central School and the surrounding Forest Road.
Fourth- and fifth-graders hiked up Carnival Hill with the seniors and National Honor Society and cleaned trash.
Students Josh Boulanger, Senja Sours and Mia Gorman were chosen to paint murals around storm drains in town. They spent the day completing those projects.
