What an excellent “Viewpoint” article by Dan Marcus (“Reigniting our American identity,” Feb. 1). It summarized a number of my thoughts. I recently read “The Summer of 1787,” which detailed the discussions that took place in writing our Constitution. Despite their differences regarding slavery and states’ rights, they were able to voice their differences and end up with our Constitution.
I was trying to see if it might shed light on our current situation. Now, Republicans disagree with anything proposed by the Democrats. Why? Is it possible that, despite all the information that is coming out about former President Donald Trump’s misdeeds, that Republicans can still say it is all incorrect? I have friends and relatives who continue to support Trump and deny there was an insurrection on Jan. 6. I can’t even discuss it with them without both of us getting upset.
Do some Southern states still feel they can make their own rules? I can only conclude that all this is due to their getting incorrect information. They are not interested in finding the truth and are unwilling to even explore a different viewpoint from that they are being told. I miss the old days when Congress would meet and reach some agreement that would be in the country’s best interests. It simply will not happen now. Could this all be the result of a Russian disinformation campaign? Who knows? It’s all very discouraging.
