I cannot help but despair when I listen to the news of pending war with Russia, North Korea’s missile launches, fighting over voting rights and the seemingly never-ending pandemic. It makes body and soul despair. However, we recently witnessed a ray of hope that life will triumph.

On a frigid day at our farm, the miracle of birth happened right before our eyes. Our dear mama goat, who we had rescued last spring, effortlessly gave birth to two healthy baby girls. As we watched her licking these little cherubs to warm them up in sub-zero temperatures, our faith in Mother Nature was rekindled. We knew in our hearts that life, precious as it is, went on this morning in our stable.

As the leader of our tight-knit team at Stepping Stones Farm & Event Center, I also marveled at the dedication and commitment of our staff. I stepped back and watched Petra Longman, our barn manager, lay out the “birthing kit,” ready for any distress with Mom and babies. Heidi Judd Kennedy and Becky Ciardelli carried warm water, fresh straw and hay across the treacherous ice. Sleeping bags, tarps and baby blankets were erected to cocoon the babies in a little nest for warmth. In a time when most businesses are shorthanded, I was sincerely grateful for their hard work, expertise and care.

Happily, all is well. This beautiful experience truly reminded me of the sanctity of life. I feel renewed, hopeful and strengthened to keep soldiering on. These three precious beings reminded me of all that is good and right with our world. May your day also be filled with wonder and hope for the future.
