AntrimEclectic Book Club schedule set

Over the past nine years, members of the Antrim Eclectic Book Club have joyfully devoured more than sixty of The Modern Library’s “100 best novels.” Having suspended meetings during the pandemic, the club will once again gather to informally discuss literature’s very best. Newcomers are welcome.

The group will convene, however, under a different format, meeting at the COVID-safe, Tuttle Library on Thursday, Aug. 26 between 2 and 3 p.m., in person in the second floor Historical Society room, and also by Zoom.

Why both Zoom-based and in-person discussions? There may be bibliomaniacs who are either unable to attend in person or who are reluctant to attend even small forums. The pertinent Zoom addresses will be communicated through the library website and the town website.

On Thursday, Aug. 26, the club will be examining John Fowles’ The Magus. This is an account of a young British teacher, stranded with his students on a bleak Greek island, who falls under the influence of a mysterious wizard. Kind of a 1950’s Harry Potter tale.

On Thursday, Sept. 16, Henry Green’s Loving will be discussed. This is an account of what happens in an Irish country house, when the aristocrats are away fighting World War Two and the servants are left to engage in their own domestic battles.

And finally on Thursday, Oct. 21, the club will dig into Iris Murdoch’s Under the Net. Her main character is one Jake Donaghue, a “shameless mooch and hack-writer…” who tries to better himself, by among other gambits, kidnapping a “movie-star canine.”
