Bennington Police are investigating after a driver fled on foot following a vehicle crash Thursday morning.

At 6:57 a.m., a 2017 Honda Civic operated by Nicole Brouillet, 30, of Bennington, was traveling north on North Bennington Road near Pine Meadow Circle, when a 2004 Subaru Legacy came into Brouillet’s lane, Police Chief Bret Sullivan said. Brouillet swerved out of the way but was unable to avoid collision and the vehicle struck her car, he said. The Subaru went off into the woods and the driver immediately took off on foot, while Brouillet’s vehicle came to rest on the side of the road, Sullivan said. Brouillet was checked by medical personnel and found to be uninjured, but both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed, he said.

Police have a suspect but could not name them, nor the registered owner of the Subaru, later on Thursday morning. There was no apparent motive for the suspect’s flight on foot, Sullivan said, but speed was a factor in the crash. Leaving the scene of an accident is an arrestable offense, he said.
