A dumpster fire behind the Guernsey Building in Peterborough Wednesday evening was extinguished quickly by firefighters.

Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker was first on the scene after a call came in around 4:21 p.m. Flames were coming from a dumpster next to the loading dock behind the Guernsey Building, high enough to be seen from Grove Street.

โ€œThey were probably up to the top of the second floor windows,โ€ Walker said. The chief upgraded the call to a first alarm since it was so close to the building, which is brick.

โ€œWe were able to get the fire extinguished pretty quickly,โ€ Walker said. โ€œThere was no extension to the building.โ€ Walker said there was no fire damage to the inside of the building.

Walker said that the dumpster mostly contained paper items and that they would investigate further to discover the cause.

โ€œThere is video surveillance here,โ€ he said. โ€œWeโ€™re going to pull the camera and see if we can find anything.โ€
