To the editor:

The most recent, a January 2020 data analysis from Abt Associates, from a federal PreK project in Massachusetts, shows that the biggest gains come for children who can’t otherwise access early childhood educational experiences. That is exactly the young crowd ConVal is pursuing with its PreK program. The last twenty-five years have produced a body of research that shows investment in the 0-5 years pays off in higher academic achievement, fewer special needs, higher earnings as adults, more participation in higher academics — even less involvement with law enforcement. These years represent the most rapid, complex and enriched development of the human brain, building the foundation upon which the future of the child, and consequently, the community, rests.

Our education system is struggling, and in many parts of the state, failing in its promise to its children. This is not due to Commissioner Edelblut’s contention that we cling to old, outdated ideas, but rather that the state refuses to invest in its future. ConVal crafts a difficult budget every year- each line is reviewed and weighed against the district goals and strategic plan. The ConVal School Board and Administration are committed to and work extremely hard at putting forward the most well-thought out and carefully crafted budget possible-each and every year. But we will not give short shrift to the children, families and Monadnock Region communities that trust us to do the best for their future.
