A New Ipswich man was hospitalized New Year’s Eve with serious injuries after he was struck by an SUV on Route 202 in Jaffrey.
Police responded to a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian at 8:14 p.m. Tuesday night on Peterborough Street/Route 202 near Belletetes, Jaffrey police said in a press release Wednesday.
Daniel Howell, 53, of New Ipswich attempted to walk across Peterborough Street near Belletetes when he was struck by a red 2004 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Anthony Skarda, 36, of Springvale, Maine, police said.
“Witnesses indicated that Howell walked out in front of on-coming traffic. Howell sustained serious injuries and was transported to Monadnock Community Hospital,” police said.
After Howell was taken by ambulance to MCH in Peterborough, Jaffrey Fire Chief David Chamberlain and a crew of emergency responders remained on scene to assist police who kept the road closed as an investigation was underway.
“We were dispatched to Peterborough Street in front of Belletetes for a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival we had a male subject in the road,” Chamberlain said on scene Tuesday night about an hour after the incident. “The driver’s currently on scene, police are interviewing him at this time.”
Wednesday police said, “The road was closed for approximately 90 minutes. The investigation is on-going.”
