On Tuesday April 11, at 10:37 a.m., the ice below the Little Church on Norway Pond in Hancock gave way.
When the ice broke, a little red flag popped up from the little structure, and a sensor sent an email to team members who were able to verify the event.
Jenn Sutton, a ConVal school district teacher, won this year for guessing the closest time the ice would go out. The prize was $419 this year.
“April 11 was a popular day,” said Judy Copeland, the Pastor at the First Congregational Church in Hancock. “A lot of people guessed in the afternoon.”
Copeland said there will be a second name drawn in the coming days, who will take away a $100 prize for entering.
An additional $419 that was raised during the fundraiser will be put towards a general maintenance fund for the First Congregational Church in Hancock.
“It’s an old building, built in the early 1800s, so it always needs maintenance,” Copeland said.
As for the little church, Hancock resident Dick Warner used a canoe to haul the structure closer to shore. The little church will be stored in a residents barn until next year’s raffle.
