A local business sustained minor damage in a two-alarm fire Friday in Jaffrey. 

Jaffrey and Peterborough firefighters used a chainsaw to cut through the exterior siding of the attic at Monadnock Disposal Services’ container shop, which the company uses as a welding site, to get at a small fire around 9:30 a.m. 

There were no injuries. The employees managed to slow the fire with a garden hose until firefighters arrived, according to a release from the department. Jaffrey Captain Chris Bergeron kept the fire at a two-alarm as officials waited for Peterborough Fire and Rescue’s ladder truck and other equipment.

On Monday, Jaffrey Fire Chief David Chamberlain called the fire “accidental,” though the department is still investigating the cause. He added that there was “nothing suspicious at this time.”

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control around 9:42 a.m., after which, welding shop workers started bringing their equipment back into the building.

Most of the Jaffrey and Peterborough firefighters stayed on scene until 11:23 a.m. working to determine the cause of the fire. Firefighters cut away parts of the siding to get the last of any burning embers. After the investigation, the still-functioning automatic garage door on the building was closed.

Jaffrey police did not allow the public onto the property, but an employee who identified himself as Don Austin told reporters that everyone was OK and “luckily” the welding shop workers were able to put the “electrical fire” out quickly.
