Reawakened civic spirit

To the editor:

On Jan. 24 the birthday of Doris “Granny D” Haddock is occurring for the 107th time – enough to make one a bit nostalgic for that intrepid citizen who walked across America at the age of 90, appealing to those whose lives she touched to do something about removing big money from the electoral process.

Since then, we’ve seen ups and downs in campaign finance reform. Right now is a time when we should all work for an “up,” a time when unprecedented, huge amounts of cash have changed hands and ended in the coffers of candidates of both parties without sufficient transparency or accountability.

The multitude of walks and demonstrations this January show that many think our democracy is in peril. Let us hope that this reawakened civic spirit will encourage the participants to take responsibility for the causes they are fighting for – be they women’s reproductive rights, Social Security, action on climate change or, yes, campaign finance reform.
