The Monadnock Center for History and Culture invites the community to step away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season to a simpler time at the Center’s Hearth Cooking Saturday on Dec. 10. This Christmas Hearth Cooking Saturday features historic holiday recipes cooked over the open fire in the Phoenix Mill House. Participants will enjoy samples and learn about what Christmas was like in the 1830s.

The day’s menu includes carrot soup, Indian cake, parsnip pancakes, gingerbread cookies, and White Pot, a traditional Christmas pudding.

The mill house will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a drop-in program. Guests may choose to stay for a short time or linger by the fire enjoying good conversation.

The Phoenix Mill House was once the home of Samuel Prescott, an overseer at the Phoenix textile mill. The small house is now used for living history demonstrations exploring the daily lives of Prescott and his family in the early years of the Industrial Revolution.

Hearth Cooking Saturday is free with museum admission ($3/ free for members and children under 12). Admission also includes the Monadnock Center’s current exhibits, Pieced and Patterned: Connie Bastille’s Quilt Collection and Schoolgirl Samplers.

The Monadnock Center is located at 19 Grove Street in downtown Peterborough. To learn more, call 924-3235 or visit MonadnockCenter.org.
