Nov. 28 is Cider Monday

Monadnock Buy Local invites locally owned businesses to participate in Cider Monday on Nov. 28.

Cider Monday is a direct and delicious antidote on the Monday after Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday. Locally owned businesses participating in Cider Monday will offer people a warm welcome and a cup of delicious cider in appreciation for spending their dollars at independent businesses.

A 2015 report by Civic Economics and the American Bookseller Association called โ€œAmazon and Empty Storefrontsโ€ quantifies some of the effects of shopping online through large corporations โ€“ effects such as the eroding of local governmentโ€™s tax revenue base and a 29 percent loss in retail jobs nationally. Cider Monday sheds a light on these facts, while staying positive and thanking community members for their year-round support.

โ€œCustomers are promised cider and smiling servers that will not crash,โ€ says Willard Williams, co-owner of the Toadstool Bookshops and founder of Cider Monday. โ€œAs always, weโ€™ll offer personal service, advice and the opportunity to touch and try items โ€“ with no logins or passwords necessary! Join us in taking a bite out of Cyber Monday.โ€

Cider Monday, already celebrated in stores from New England to Illinois, is now an international event. Participating businesses will be listed on Monadnock Buy Localโ€™s Cider Monday webpage: http://monadnocklocal.org/cidermonday.

Business owners who wish to sign up for this yearโ€™s Cider Monday can contact Jen Risley from Monadnock Buy Local at monadnockbuylocal@gmail.com or 499-7950. For more information about Cider Monday, contact Willard Williams at The Toadstool Bookshop, Peterborough at 924-3543 or books@ptoad.com.

Cider Monday is part of the โ€œShift Your Shoppingโ€ movement. From Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, groups like Monadnock Buy Local encourage people to choose local and independent businesses for more of their holiday purchases: monadnocklocal.org/shiftyourshopping.
