A 10-foot by 20-foot brush fire on Mount Monadnock was quelled on Saturday afternoon before things got out of control.
Jaffrey Fire Chief David Chamberlain said his crew was called to the Marlborough trail at 2:13 p.m. Chamberlain said the fire, which was about 4,500 feet up the mountain, was a small fire, but was deep in the ground.
“This fire went deep, about eight or nine inches,” said Chamberlain, who said the fire may have been started by a recreational fire.
Overall, the fire took about three hours to contain; Chamberlain said the crew contained the fire by 5:21 p.m. and closed the scene around 6:00 p.m.
Dublin, Marlborough, and Troy fire departments, as well as state park staff assisted with the fire.
Chamberlain said those hiking on the mountain should properly dispose of cigarettes and let local authorities know if you smell smoke on the mountain. Chamberlain also said that recreational fires are not permitted on the mountain.
