Volunteers and conversations. These are the things that can help to change a person’s mind.
That was the main message to a crowd at the opening of a new New Hampshire Together Coordinated Campaign office in Peterborough – offices which coordinate volunteers with the intent to campaign for Hillary Clinton and Democratic candidates down the ticket.
“Campaigns are run on the backs of ordinary people,” said Adrian Koster, Peterborough organizer for Clinton’s campaign, when speaking to the room. “How Democracy works is that you get what you work for. Campaigning is hard, and a lot of work, but talking to people at the doors, that is what changes minds.”
In addition to encouraging increased volunteerism for the Clinton campaign, the office volunteers are also encouraging voting Democratic down the ticket, with several local nominees speaking at the opening to endorse Clinton and give their own short stump speeches, including Executive Council candidate Dan Weeks and County Attorney candidate Garth Corriveau.
Weeks cited Clinton’s work with the Children’s Defense Fund after law school, and her running mate Tim Kaine’s missionary work in Honduras as points to their character, and reiterated the need for volunteers to hit the streets and speak to people in the days leading up to the November election.
“Each call, each conversation, is an opprotunity to build another bridge,” said Weeks.
This weekend, the office will hold a Weekend of Action Canvass as part of a national campaign weekend. Volunteers will meet at the Monadnock Plaza on 1 Jaffrey Road at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
