Jaffrey’s Recycling Committee is making an effort to keep knowledge out of the garbage.

New to the transfer station is a donation basket for used books. It is from an organization called Big Hearted Books, whose slogan asks people to “re-use books and keep them out of the landfill.”

The directions on the box read that the organization is “Seeking gently used books, CDs, DVDs, records and video games,” according to a press release.

Big Hearted Books was founded in 2009 and has over 1,300 drop-off containers in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

There were already two locally, in Rindge and Peterborough.

Jaffrey’s was placed about a month ago, after the Recycling Committee toured the Winchendon, Massachusetts, facility as part of its initiative to study best practices to improve the transfer station.

When members saw the book bin, they noted the phone number and reached out to Big Hearted Books, which was very receptive.

The Big Hearted Books box is white and located between the Planet Aid and Salvation Army donation bins.
