Peterborough’s Select Board formally decided to sell town-owned property on Condy Road at its meeting last Tuesday.
The parcel, located at 67 Condy Road, just south of Route 101 toward Temple, came into the town’s possession due to tax delinquency.
Attempts were made by the town to contact the owner but to no avail. After enough time passes with unpaid taxes, the town takes ownership via a tax deed.
“We did decide we are going to sell it,” board member Barbara Miller said.
The property has been appraised at a value of over $172,000, according to Select Board Chair Ed Juengst.
The town, Juengst said, is trying to earn back the $50,000 it is owed it unpaid taxes, plus fees. It is likely the sale will go through a realtor, first, but Juengst said the property could wind up being sold at auction.
The July 19 meeting was the first of two mandatory public hearings for the town to sell publicly possessed property.
The second public meeting about the land will be held at the board’s Aug. 2 meeting.
The property is beset by overgrown landscaping is in need of maintenance once the sale is made.
“We don’t want to have to keep and maintain it,” Juengst said. “That would cost the taxpayers money.”
67 Condy Road has a single-family residence, unpaved driveway with garage, and a shed.
The Aug. 2 mandatory public hearing will be at 5 p.m., and will likely be the final hearing on the property.
