The driver involved in a crash at the Centertown Plaza at the corner of Summer Street and Main streets has been released from the hospital.

The accident occurred at around 3:20 p.m. on Monday, July 18, when Stephen Marchuk, 56, of Hancock drove his truck over the sidewalk, across the Centertown parking lot, and into the building’s brick facade.

“He was transferred to the hospital by ambulance and was treated and released,” Peterborough police Capt. Ernest Belletete said.

According to Belletete, Marchuk was driving the 2006 Ford pick-up truck on Depot Street when he drove across Main Street, over the sidewalk and into Centertown Plaza. The crash did serious damage to the building. The truck struck the building in front of Vicuna Chocolate Factory & Cafe, which did not have anybody inside at the time.

The cafe is only open to customers on weekends, and owner Neely Cohen was out.

“I had just left, but our neighbors at the eye doctors were there and everyone’s OK,” she said.

She said she does not know the cost of repairs yet, but said that she is working with her insurance company, as well as the driver’s and building owner’s to settle the expenses. The cause of the accident is not certain.

“We believe at this time it was something medical, but we’re still looking at that,” Belletete said.
